Product Description
Large Black and White Abstract Photograph.
A photographic representation of work of Pablo Curatella Manes and Antonio Sibellino, Argentina.
Pablo Curatella Manes (1891-1962) was an Argentine sculptor known for his modernist works that often featured abstract, geometric forms with flowing, organic qualities – very much like what we see in this image. He studied in Europe and was influenced by cubism and constructivism, which is evident in the piece’s interplay between angular and curved elements.
Antonio Sibellino (1891-1960), also Argentine, created sculptures with similar abstract modernist sensibilities. His work often featured the kind of formal experimentation with positive and negative space that’s apparent in this relief.
Paris connection: Pablo Curatella Manes lived in Paris, studied under notable artists including Henri Laurens and Constantin Brâncuși, and had an atelier on rue Lauriston.
Photograph likely taken by Roget Prigent, who in his pre antique dealing days was a prominent photographer. A colleague of Lillian Bassman and Richard Avedon, his work graced the covers of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and many more. Prigent, being French and involved in the art world, likely would have been aware of Latin American artists working in Paris.
94″ w x 49″h
Last image is a sculpture with almost identical shapes and movement which is attributed to these artists.
